In this day and age, computer an detail scams are all over the internet.  There are a few simple rules to follow for email and general computer use that should keep you safe.

Never give your password out to anyone over the internet.  No reputable company will ask you to provide their representative with your password.

Never give out your social security number.  No reputable company will ask you for your social security number over the internet.  If someone asks you for it and claims to be from your bank, call your local branch and report it right away.

Never give out your account number.  No bank or reputable vendor will write you an email and ask for your social security number, account number, password, pin number, address, credit card number, or the like.

An email meant for you from paypal or most banks will have your full name, not "hello customer."  Even if it seems to be from them, don't email them with any personal information.

If it sounds fishy, it probably is.  Call the vendor and ask them if they sent you the email.  Forward the email to them.  Use your good sense and trust your instincts!

Better know a scam:
The Nigerian Oil scam:  The premise is simple.  Usually claiming to be a bank manager or an heir to a multi-million-dollar fortune, and all they need is your help to transfer their money into a U.S. bank account.  Sounds simple enough.  But then the troubles start.  First, they need money to arrange a flight.  Next, some more money so they can get their family, and the needs just keep on coming.  Don't fall for this scam!
Warning from NovaTech:
Phishing scams are running rampant through email right now.  If you get an email from Paypal, a bank, especially a bank you don't  bank with, asking you to "update you account", report it, and then delete the email.  Be sure not to click on anything inside the email.  Never reply to the email.
You can be held legally, financially, and criminally responsible for what your computer does; even if you don't know it is doing it.  If you have spyware, a trojan horse, virus or any number of other infections your computer can be used to attack a company.  If your computer is used that way you can be sued, or even put in jail if the problem is big enough!
Remember...
Remember to always have an active and up-to-date antivirus scanner.
Also, be sure to have Automatic Updates install updates when your computer is on.

Pay attention to what you are doing on the internet.  Remember, you can always call us if you don't understand what is going on.
Never just click on something to get it out of your face.  Look at it, pay attention and click on the "X" in the upper right hand side.  Don't just hit OK.
Helpful Information:
Scams are relatively easily to recognize if you know what to look for.  The easiest way to tell is in the greeting.  If it says, "Dear Sir or Madam", they have no idea who you are, and all they have is your email address.  Delete the email without going any further.
